Bamako, the country’s vibrant capital, is the fastest growing urban expanse in Africa and the rapid turn of young people from the village to the city, has profoundly affected the value placed on Mali's ancient musical traditions (musical instruments, songs, oratory, and dance). Collaborators include Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois (U2, Peter Gabriel) and Michael Brook (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan). Beautifully re-mastered, with a bonus track (“Ordinary Mind”) and liner notes written by Hassell himself. The 21st century claims to be borderless. A world of hyper-communication and instant nostalgia that is both celebrated and feared. On “Lion City” Dirtmusic stayed clear of such theorizing and just got on with the practice. The collective joy they found in making this music is what mattered most. ×Dirtmusic • Troubles 01 Chicken Scratch 02 Fitzcarraldo 03 The Big Bend 04 Wa Ya You 05 Up To Us 06 Troubles 07 La Paix 08 Take It On The Chin 09 Wa Nazu 10 Sleeping Beauty 11 God Is A Mistery Troubles is an album from Dirtmusic – Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts) and Hugo Race (Fatalists/True Spirit/Bad Seeds) – recorded in Bamako, Mali, in September 2012 during the high-tension and tragic recent crisis – hence the name, ‘Troubles’. 153682ay…it is our culture which will die.” Afel Bocoum/Malian musician Mali's traditional life, customs and art forms (musical and otherwise) are in a steady process of decline. Bamako, the country’s vibrant capital, is the fastest growing urban expanse in Africa and the rapid turn of young people from the village to the city, has profoundly affected the value placed on Mali's ancient musical traditions (musical instruments, songs, oratory, and dance). The repositories of these traditions (elders, artisans, musicians, dancers, healers) are finding it increasingly difficult to transmit their arts to the ascendant, transitory generation. Bamako-based producer/educator Paul Chandler has been documenting the sonic and cultural complexities of Malian traditional music for more than a decade and “Every Song Has Its End” is an out-of-time, visceral collection of sounds from Chandler’s unparalleled archive. Echoes of these sounds can of course be heard in the urbanized Malian music that has been artisans153182artisans label making paper15822t wasn’t me who came up with the idea of Bambara blues. People kept saying, ‘Bambara blues, Bambara blues.’ In the end, I accepted it. But I don’t think the blues is our music.” In 1990, Lobi was invited to perform with an acoustic trio1_b@b_1the Africolor festival in France, and this became an annual ritual. He returned to Abdijan for the MASA festival where he played electric with a group of percussionists—“modern traditional music” as he called it. Lobi recorded three CD releases for the Cobalt label: Bamako (1994), Segou (1996), and Duga (1999). But there was a schism in Lobi’s musical persona during these years. His international releases presented a toned-down, acoustic side of his music, while his club dates in Bamako became ever more wild, raw, and raucous. Subsequent CD releases like The Lobi Traore Group (Honest Jon, 2005) did capture the more unbridled, rocking side of Lobi’s chameleon musical persona. But all of it is Lobi, an artist with many faces. This Act rationalised the legal system in Britain by united seven different courts into one High Court of Justice. 1874 Licensing Act. This was an amendment to Gladstone's Act and provided for longer opening hours. The Factory Act reduced working hours to 10 per day; it also said that no child couild be employed until the age of 10 and no young person could work full time until the age of 14. 1875 Artisans' Dwelling Act: local authorities were given the power to buy and demolish slum houses and replace them with modern, healthy housing. Because of severe opposition, the powers were permissive rather than compulsory Conspiracy and Protection of Property Act. This again legalised peaceful picketing and allowed unions to cary out as a group whatever individuals could do in law. Unmions could no longer be charged with conspiracy for taking such action. The Rural Constabularies Act extended the 1829 Metropolitan Police Act and required counties to establish their own police forces. The Act was passed in the face of Chartist activity. 1840 Penny Post. This was the idea of Sir Rowland Hill. Prior to this, recipients paid for any letters that were sent to them. Hereafter, the sender attached an adhesive, pre-paid label to any items that were posted. The most famous 'stamp' of this period is the Penny Black. 1842 Railway Act. This first piece of railway legislation was mainly a safety Act to ensure that railways ran safe services. New lines had to be inspected by the Board of Trade, which could demand traffic returns and inquire into accidents. The Companies Act aimed to prevent 'reckless speculation' and to prevent the establishment of dubious compaines by making it compulsory for all companies to be registered officially. The companies also had to issue prospectuses and publish accounts regularly. 1846 Repeal of the Corn Laws. The Corn Laws had been passed in 1815 and had raised the price of wheat artificially, leading to an economic depression. The Government's decision to reduce the stamp duty was primarily due to the success of the "war of the unstamped", and in 1836 the duty was reduced from 4d to 1d, in order to take the unstamped newspapers off the streets while allowing legal newspapers wider circulation. 1837 Registration Act (of Births, Marriages and Deaths). Although the 1833 Factory Act restricted working hours for young people, there was no means of telling the age of a person since no official records existed. Ulysses31 Funnily enough, I prefer the smooth pushers to the original ones. Valannin I do, too, actually, which brings up the question: Why doesn't Artisans of Geneve just manufacture and release their own designs under their own label? Seems rather lazy to capitalize on someone else's brand by swapping out a few parts. $10K for a rotor, a bezel and some pushers? Methinks not. benjameshodges Yeah I wondered why they bothered to remove the screw-down pushers. This article is misleading too. These watches, produced in seriously limited runs, start life as a Rolex Daytona 116520 before being transformed into a ticker from antiquity. Before I delve into the specifics of this watch and how these craftspeople have simultaneously changed and stayed true to the Rolex Daytona 6263 in the creation of this homage, I feel it would be beneficial to place this company in the wider context of watchmaking and ask whether we have seen anything like this before. When I first read the press release, I thought I was looking1_b@b_1the proposal for a Swiss-based Bamford Watch Department, but that's not the case1_b@b_1all. This company takes a different tack to the concept of customisation of a Rolex in the style of Bamford or Made Worn (this Rolex Milgauss by Made Worn is still my favourite Rolex ever). Valannin The REAL Ref 6263 “Big Red” had screwdown pushers. So they spent two years researching the font on the dial, and no one bothered to check out the chrono pushers on the original? Ulysses31 Funnily enough, I prefer the smooth pushers to the original ones. Valannin I do, too, actually, which brings up the question: Why doesn't Artisans of Geneve just manufacture and release their own designs under their own label? Seems rather lazy to capitalize on someone else's brand by swapping out a few parts. $10K for a rotor, a bezel and some pushers? Methinks not. benjameshodges Yeah I wondered why they bothered to remove the screw-down pushers. This article is misleading too. I clicked on the link to the website and saw the most Bamford-esque abomination straight away. Valannin Yeah, the wanna-be Invicta Submariner atrocity that has the word “matte” misspelled throughout the enlabel13211artisans label making paper2538he first watch from Les Artisans de Genève, and it is available with either a black or white dial. This is more like an homage, with a restoration to make the watch a contemporary piece. The construction is unusual. The upper, hinged portion is built around a cardboard cigar box. This was surrounded with 1/2" thick boards1_b@b_1the sides and back to make it taller, a drawer added underneath, then the whole box was decorated with chip-carved wood layers, some in free-form shapes. It was painted in two shades of rose, blue, black, and brown, with each notch highlighted in dull gold. Metal tacks and handles complete the decoration. There is a label inside from a Pennsylvania cigar factory. The box stands 8 3/4" tall by 11" wide by 6" deep. The condition is fairly good. There is some wear to the edges of the cardboard part, mainly visible in the top corners and the edge just above the drawer. See the photos for details. Also, the hinges have pulled away from the cardboard, so that the lid is only held on by the metal slider inside. It is from the mid-1900's. The price is $395.00. Inventory Code: CATS. See a slideshowlabel2651artisans label making paper18444igar boxes over a crate wood base. The exterior is about 23 1/4" by 18 1/2", while the opening is around 14 1/2" by 9 3/4". It is built in up to 5 layers, and is about 1 1/2" deep including the base. The chip carved corners each have crescent moons applied. The outside of the frame is decorated with many carved pieces that were set in under the long pyramids. The inside of the frame is also decorated with some nice larger notching. There are a variety of shades of woods making up this piece. These all seem to be original, their differences coming from using a variety of cigar boxes. Some of the labels are visible on the back, including a NJ tax stamp. The entire frame has a lacquer surface. This piece is in extremely good condition with a few small chips and perhaps the loss of a tiny bit of the tip of one moon. It was likely made in the early 1900's. The price is $475.00. The glass windows are backed with hand-drawn paper to simulate leaded glass. One end has a very elaborate carved door, with a fretwork "stained glass" window above and three crosses on the roof. A watch was set into the tower as the church clock. Presumably this was intended to be decorative rather than functional, as there is no way to open the church to wind the clock. It is mounted on a base that forms the churchyard, with a tramp art fence and carved gate. The finish is a warm, rich, medium-dark lacquer with a good surface. Tpaper10629artisans label making paper

With a yardstick and soda can for scale. This is an extremely large and finely detailed tramp art church. The pictures will have to tell the story of how intricate and beautiful the workmanship is.

Footwear Brands That Are making Africa Proud (And The Amazing Entrepreneurs Behind Them!) - Smallstarter Africa ...
3040t: solerebels.com SoleRebels is arguably the most popular and fastest-growing African footwear brand in the world! It’s no surprise we featured it in our recent book; “101 Ways To Make Money in Africa.” It sells its ‘eco-friendly’ brand of footwear in more than 50 countries; including the USA, Canada, Japan and Switzerland. Bethlehem Alemu started SoleRebels in 2004 with less than $10,000 in capital she raised from family members. She came up with her business idea after she noticed most of the artisans in her community, who made beautiful footwear, remained jobless and poor. Today, Solerebels has more than 100 employees and nearly 200 local raw material suppliers, and has opened several standalone retail outlets in North America, Europe and Asia. Despite its very humble beginnings, SoleRebels now makes up to $1 million in sales every year, and according to Bethlehem’s projections and expansion plans, the company could be making up to $10 million in sales by 2016. The brand is proud of its African roots and this is boldly reflected in its name and its recent “Kwanzaa” collection, which features African names, bright colours and loud patterns (which represent the diversity of the African continent. Buqisi-Ruux is based in Nairobi, Kenya and has a presence in Kampala (Uganda) and Cape Town (South Africa), and also sells its beautiful pieces through its online store. In the case of music as medicine, such music allows for thinking, feeling and imagery to reconnect to a deeper sense of integration, union, oneness… Laraaji has experienced a resurgence in recent years, following a renewed interest in outsider new-age music (he appears on last year's “I Am The Center” compilation on Light In The Attic) and a career spanning compilation (“Celestial Music 1978 – 2011”) and reissue project dedicated to his work by Eno’s All Saints label. Laraaji also continues to interface with other of musicians who have found inspiration in his work: Bill Laswell, Sun Araw, Blues Control, Julia Holter and many others. He seems more than content with where he finds himself today: I find that people are having a chance to listen to a variety of the music I do and some of their eyes are opening to what they call the more spiritual side and some who thought they just liked the spiritual side are getting in touch with the artistic side, and label10940artisans label making paper40018p Hop artist adds a fiery incantation to the mostly instrumental “Day the Grid Went Down.” +Ibrahima Douf, a young singer from Senegal, provides a stunning vocal on the album’s final track “September 12.” The song is an ode to his grandmother. The repositories of these traditions (elders, artisans, musicians, dancers, healers) are finding it increasingly difficult to transmit their arts to the ascendant, transitory generation.
