This northernmost continent is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Pacific Ocean on the west, Arctic Ocean on the north and the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic ocean on the south. North America is broadly divided into four great regions: the Great Plains stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian Arctic, the Rocky Mountains, the Great Basin and Alaska in the west, and the plateau of the Canadian Shield in the northeast. The eastern region of the continent is the fourth great region that comprises the Appalachian Mountains, the Florida peninsula, and the coastal plain. The Great Plains and the Mississippi River System are among the most interesting geographical features of North America. Except a few hills, the Great Plains is generally a large swathe of treeless areas and shallow river valleys. Mississippi (3,765 km) is the most important river of North America. 1North America vs. South America - Compare Side by Side | reComparison Welcome! Comparisons Q & A Join Now Log in Home » Comparisons » Travel » Places Attractions North America vs. South America By reComparison Contributor 11 24339 Difference between North America and South America Although the cultures of North America and South America couldn't be any more different, comparisons between the two are inevitable, given their proximity to each other. Admittedly, there are quite a few similarities between both, especially with regard to geographical features, but there certainly enough differences that distinguish them as two decidedly individual continents. Let's take a look at some of their more distinctive geographical traits.Photo by Digital SextantPhoto by thejourney1972DiversityThe geographical make up of North America is quite diverse, and it is made up of no less than six major regions, eacNorth1North Eastern South America1776 30 36era and the Antillean System.South America is actually quite similar to North America in terms of geographical diversity, with high mountains to be found in the western section of the continent and lower rolling mountains towards the east. In between these mountain ranges are broad lowland plains. That being said, South America does have a higher mountain range in the Andes than can be found in North America. On the other hand, the plains in South America cover a much smaller land area, and the eastern highlands is more spread apart.LowlandsThe Coastal Plain of North America stretches from the eastern coast of the country, running from Mexico to Cape Cod. This plain reaches out to the ocean as the continental shelf, and it actually makes up the islands of the Bahamas. The Interior Plains for its part is wide and fairly level, and it makes up a huge part of the interior of North America. This places it squarely between the Appalachian Highlands, the Canadian Shield, and the Rocky MountaEastern South America1276North Eastern South America

Located south of the Amazon River in Brazil, the Brazilian Highlands are made up of low mountains and plateaus that rise to an average elevation of 1,006 meters (3,300 feet). The Guiana Highlands are located between the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers. The heavily forested plateau of the Guiana Highlands covers southern Venezuela, French Guiana, Guyana, northern Brazil, and a portion of southeastern Colombia. Not just for East Coast.. By C. Wallis Davenport on January 30, 2004Format: Flexibound Verified Purchase I bought this book because I live in the Northeast. However, I was surprised to discover that this edition actually has most species of birds, including those that live in the West or South, with ranges through and including Mexico. This was a wonderful surprise as I actually travel quite a bit, so I don't have to buy additional editions of Sibley's bird books. As to the content of Sibley's guide, there is none better. His illustrations are outstanding, and descriptions are just wonderful. He describes ranges, eating habits, whether the bird tends to be solitary or fly in groups (flocks), nesting, coloration, etc. Best of all, I really like how he shows the bird in a multitudeSouth8993North Eastern South America50The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America: David Allen Sibley: 9780679451204: Amazon.com: Books Amazon Try Prime Books All Departments Amazon Video Appliances Apps & Games Arts, Crafts & Sewing Automotive Baby Beauty Books CDs & Vinyl Cell Phones & Accessories Home Services Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry '''Women '''Men '''Girls '''Boys '''Baby Collectibles & Fine Art Computers Credit and Payment Cards Digital Music Electronics Gift Cards Grocery & Gourmet Food Handmade Health & Personal Care Home & Kitchen Industrial & Scientific Kindle Store Luggage & Travel Gear Luxury Beauty Magazine Subscriptions Movies & TV Musical Instruments Office Products Patio, Lawn & Garden Pet Supplies Prime Pantry Software Sports & Outdoors Tools & Home Improvement Toys & Games Video Games Wine Go Shop byDepartment Hello. In the far north, the continent stretches halfway around the world, from Greenland to the Aleutians. But at Panama's narrowest part, the continent is just 50 kilometers (31 miles) across. North America's physical geography, environment and resources, and human geography can be considered separately.North America can be divided into five physical regions: the mountainous west, the Great Plains, the Canadian Shield, the varied eastern region, and the Caribbean. Mexico and Central America's western coast are connected to the mountainous west, while its lowlands and coastal plains extend into the eastern region. Within these regions are all the major types of biomes in the world. A biome is a community of animals and plants spreading over an extensive area with a relatively uniform climate.
